Kentucky Proud Connection 2013

The first Kentucky Farm to School Junior Chef Cook Off will take place during this year's Kentucky State Fair on the Gourmet Garden stage, where the fair's annual Cast Iron Chef Competition is held.

Kentucky's best exhibitors and show animals converge on Louisville to put their skills to the test in front of nationally recognized judges and a statewide audience. All their hard work, and everything they've learned about preparing and showing livestock projects, lead to the Kentucky Exposition Center in August.

Kentucky Proud was on the menu at the Farm to Table Dinner on July 30 at Cynthia's California Tuscan Ristorante in Paducah. A sellout crowd of 55 people enjoyed a bounty of foods grown, raised or processed in Kentucky by Kentuckians and prepared by one of Paducah's leading chefs.

Wineries from Paducah, Lexington, Versailles, and rural Warren County took the most coveted honors at the inaugural Kentucky Commonwealth Commercial Wine Competition in July in Louisville.

Kentucky Farm Bureau President Mark Haney also talked to "Across Kentucky" host Mike Feldhaus about trends in fruit production and the growth of KFB's Certified Roadside Market program. (audio)

Spotted wing drosophila was detected for the first time in two UK integrated pest management traps in 2012. This year, the fruit fly first appeared in the state at the end of June and was causing problems for berry producers by the middle of July.
