Selling the Product
The Kentucky Department of Agriculture has granted permission to the Appalachian Wildlife Foundation to use the trademarked Appalachian Proud brand in the name of its forthcoming wildlife center. This family-friendly facility, devoted to wildlife conservation, habitat restoration and Appalachian culture, will also feature a new marketplace for locally produced food, arts, and crafts. It will sell fresh honey from on-site bee hives and establish research plots for orchards and vineyards.
The Department encourages all Kentucky colleges and universities to join the Kentucky Proud Farm to Campus program, which helps participating institutions get local foods to serve to their students, faculty, and staff while boosting their local economies.
The Kentucky Proud Farm to School Program enables schools to purchase local foods to help school children grow up to be healthy adults who demand fresh, locally produced foods while creating new markets for local farmers. In 2013, the program launched the Farm to School Junior Chef competition. This is a statewide high school cooking competition designed to offer youth the opportunity to learn valuable skills in recipe development, food preparation, marketing, public presentation, organization, teamwork and community involvement. Additionally, the program will stimulate interest in local agriculture, create a nontraditional market for Kentucky producers, increase quality of products available to school cafeterias, and ultimately increase consumption of produce by Kentucky’s students. The Harlan County Panther Cooking Team took top prize in 2018.
